The icon was stolen on 23 May 1994 from the Local History Museum in the town of Ustyug (Vologda region). It was discovered in the private Temple gallery in London, returned to Russia in 2005 and presented by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexei II in 2006

The painting belonged to the Russian Museum and disappeared during World War II from the Alupka Palace Museum where it was temporarily on display. It was discovered in October 2005 at an antique fair in the Metropole Antiquarian shop in Moscow and returned on 18 November 2005
